Apple Inc. has made a significant change in its organizational structure by choosing not to replace its outgoing head of product design, a role that has long been key to the company's reputation for creating visually stunning and intuitive devices. The current Vice President of Industrial Design, Evans Hankey, will not be replaced, according to anonymous sources familiar with the matter. Apple declined to comment on the situation.

Instead, a core team of approximately 20 industrial designers will now report to Jeff Williams, Apple's Chief Operating Officer. Additionally, a group of veteran designers at Apple will be given expanded responsibilities. For many years, Apple's design executives were highly visible and integral figures at the company. Even prior to Ive's ascension to head of design in 1997, when Steve Jobs returned to Apple, executives such as Robert Brunner were celebrated for shaping the company's products. Apple has faced challenges finding a replacement for its top product designer, Evans Hankey, who announced her departure last October. Her exit is part of a wider trend of departures from the design team, which has made it difficult for Apple to identify potential successors. While a number of veteran designers, including Molly Anderson, Duncan Kerr, Bart Andre, Richard Howarth, Peter Russell-Clarke, and Ben Shaffer, have remained at Apple, others have left to join LoveFrom, a design and consulting firm founded by Ive and Marc Newson. As part of the restructuring, Apple will give larger roles to the remaining designers, but they will report to Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, rather than to a new head of industrial design. Williams will now have a closer relationship with the design team, an arrangement that has caused some tensions within the creative staff.
